Why Adobe…WHY???

First, a little history…

A couple years ago when working at orgasm.com, I was in charge of version control, among other things. One issue that caused me grief numerous times was the case insensitivity of OS X. Meaning it sees ‘file1.fla’ and ‘FiLe1.FLa’ as the same exact file. Of course our svn server which was running Debian, didn’t see things the same way. So this ended up causing unexpected overwrites of people’s work if another person had used a similar file name with different casing(?). Silly, I know. And don’t even get me started on the almighty (almighty in that it screws everything up) mac resource file.

Back to tonight…

I just got done reinstalling leopard on my macbook pro to hopefully get rid of the beachballs I’ve been getting lately. During the install, I saw an option that made me smile. Yes folks, you CAN opt to have a case sensitive OS X install! This is great since who knows what other problems the case insensitivity could cause with other applications down the road.Or so I thought.

As I’m running down the list of the apps I need to install, I get to CS3 and am greeted with this lovely dialog:

Wat r case sensitives???/?

Wat r case sensitives???/?

Did a little digging around and found that case insensitivity is a requirement for installing CS3. WTF.

I cannot even fathom any reason why you would possibly NEED the filesystem to be case insensitive and crap yourself if it wasn’t. Even better, apparently CS3 isn’t the only app with this “requirement”. And even better yet, the only solution is to REFORMAT and REINSTALL!

Hopefully this post will prevent someone else from doing what I did; Making a sane decision and getting screwed. Thanks Adobe!
